NTCRA – Completed Activities

October 2016 – Present

  • Since completion of Building Demolition, the site has been routinely inspected and maintained. Monthly Inspections are performed to ensure security measures (i.e. fences, alarm systems, etc.) are in check, building liners are not damaged, and site controls are maintained. There have been no significant issues noted during the inspection periods.

September 2016

  • Equipment to remain on site received final maintenance and preparation for long term storage. de maximis performed Post-Site Control Activities through the month and installed a security system on remaining trailers.

August 2016

  • Installation of the liners over all the Building Slabs was completed, as was all site restoration efforts involved with the Demolition Work Plan. As part of the Demolition Work Plan, subcontractors terminated the fire loop and removed all terminated hydrants.
  • The demolition contractors demobilized from the site and remaining equipment was surveyed, characterized and free released.
  • Shipping and disposal of building debris was completed, totaling 912 intermodal shipment to US Ecology, totaling 23.5 million lbs. Building Demolition specific shipments totaled 479 trucks and 14.99 million lbs of debris

July 2016

  • Building Demolition was completed; Buildings A, B and E were removed and installation of the temporary liner was completed over these areas. Additional removal efforts included excavation and disposal of the underground storage tanks.

June 2016

  • Continued Building Demolition activities; Buildings B and Butler B4 were completed. Included in the process was the filling and capping of the Building B basements and elevator pits. Approximately 80% of Building E was removed during the month.
  • Installation of the temporary slab liner continued throughout the Building C, and preparations began on the Building B, B4 and E slabs for installation of the liner.
  • The remaining oil and sludge from the underground storage tanks was removed, and preparations began to allow for easy removal of the tanks

May 2016

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including the removal of ACM transite panels from Buildings A, B, and C.
  • Continued Building Demolition activities; by the end of May, Buildings C, D and Butler B4 were demolished and packaged in intermodals for offsite disposal at USEI. Installation of the temporary cover over Buildings C and D began.
  • Through the end of May, 122 intermodals of demolition debris had been shipped off site to US Ecology Idaho for land disposal, totaling 3,788,810 pounds (1894 tons).

April 2016

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including completion of cutting and resizing of remaining building equipment using burn bars, terminated the electrical and natural gas service to the building, installed a 12-inch shut off valve on the fire suppression waterline as requested by the Concord Water department, continued installation of the Water Treatment System, and commenced ACM panel abatement from the eastern side of Building C.
  • Commenced building demolition activities on 19 APR 2016 and by the end of April, about 50% of Building D was removed.
  • Continued Transportation and Disposal activities, including completing a minor lab-pack on 11APR removing the remaining batteries, lead, and PCB ballast. US Ecology mobilized to the
  • One health and safety incident occurred during the month of April and the Concord Police and Fire Department responded to assist a subcontractor worker injured during site work. The individual is now back to work.

February 2016

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including final cleaning and lock down in Building D; loaded seven intermodal containers with remaining contaminated debris for final loading campaign prior to demolition.

January 2016

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including: sealing remaining cracks and floor penetrations; mobilized the water treatment building and constructed a temporary foundation for it; cleaned and decontaminated the Frac-tank and relocated to the water treatment system building location; completed interior radiological surveys of buildings and support structures; completed application of lock-down and floor sealant in Buildings A, B, and E.
  • Provided a site tour to the Concord Assistance Fire Chief on 13 JAN and deactivated the buildings fire suppression system and alarm on 20 JAN.
  • Sent Request for Proposal for NTCRA Sub-Slab Boring Investigation to prospective drilling companies and hosted a site tour.
  • Perimeter air monitoring was suspended during January and will resume prior to commencement of Stage 2 Demolition activities.

December 2015

  • Continued building stabilization activities including interior radiological surveys of buildings and support structures; sealing remaining cracks and floor penetrations;
  • Completed installation of temporary covers on the slabs associated with the Stage 1 Demolition activities;
  • Charter demobilized from the site for winter; building demolition activities are scheduled to resume 1 APR 16;
  • Completed packaging of materials in DOT-approved containers for shipment to EnergySolutions;
  • Completed December shipping campaign: all acid and caustic wastes, DU, and waste oils were transported off site to EnergySolutions in Clive, Utah for disposal.

 

November 2015

  • Performed a site tour for the Agencies on 13 NOV.
  • Continued building stabilization activities, including interior radiological surveys of buildings and support structures; sealing of remaining cracks and floor penetrations;
  • Completed Stage 1 demolition activities, which included demolition of Butler Buildings B1, B2, and B3, the Tank House, Pump House #2, Acetone Shed, Hydrogen Peroxide Shed, compaction dumpster, and gas cylinder shed; demolition debris packaged for off-site disposal;
  • Commenced installation of temporary covers on the slabs of the demolished structures; completed final lock-down of Buildings A and B.
  • Completed November shipping campaign of 34 intermodals containing 353.3 tons to US Ecology Idaho for land disposal.

October 2015

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including: interior and exterior radiological surveys of Buildings C, D, and E, removing interior stick-ups from the concrete slab and sealing the remaining cracks and penetrations, applied “lock-down” to surface coatings of walls and floors of ancillary buildings scheduled for demolition as part of Stage 1, installed a new electrical supply to Pump House #1 and new flood lights in the office trailer parking lots, completed utility and vacuum line removal from the Building D contamination reduction zone and mechanical garage, complete a clean-up effort to remove the majority of loose dust on the floors of Buildings C, D, and E.
  • Charter mobilized to the site on 26OCt15 and set up erosion controls around the ancillary buildings scheduled for Stage 1 demolition.
  • Met with Chief of the Concord Fire Department for a tour of the buildings on 23OCT15.
  • Installed propane heaters and tanks in Buildings C and E.
  • Received conditional EPA approval on 20OCT15 for the RTC and Revised Phase 3 Construction Submittal and response to comments.

September 2015

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including: vacuuming and wiping down the trusses and ceiling throughout the buildings; began removal of the interior stick-ups from the concrete slab and sealing the remaining cracks and penetrations; completed interior and exterior radiological surveys in Buildings A, B, Butler B1, B2, B3, the Tank house and pump house 2; commenced interior and exterior radiological surveys of Buildings C, D, and E; completed the final lock down of the second floor in Buildings A and B.

August 2015

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including: completed loading 12 intermodal containers with the remaining debris generated from the buildings; completed removal of remaining insulation from Building D; completed removal of Building D office mezzanine; completed vacuuming and wiping down the trusses and ceilings in Buildings A and B; commenced vacuuming and wiping efforts in Buildings D and C; commenced radiological surveys of Buildings A and B for the final characterization of the buildings.
  • Heat-stress monitoring efforts continued to protect workers from elevated temperatures.

July 2015

  • All rooftop units and equipment have been removed from the roof, decontaminated, and re-sized. Work in accordance with the Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan was complete on 16 JUL 2015.
  • Conducted a Geophysical Survey of the Building C Courtyard and northern parking lot. Initial report from the geophysical contractor is that they observed only the one previously identified drum.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including: completed filling and capping of the 1400 ton press and picking area pits; completed removal of utilities from the Building C support area.
  • Completed removal of remaining asbestos containing material that was inaccessible during the initial asbestos abatement. Asbestos tiles were removed from the support area and Building E elevator.
  • Completed the Summer 2015 shipping campaign. Forty (40) containers totaling 731,930 pounds, or 366 tons, were shipped off-site for disposal at US Ecology, Idaho.
  • Submitted Phase 3 Construction Submittal to the agencies for review on 13JUL2015.

June 2015

  • Completed the Spring 2015 shipping campaign with 64 intermodal containers totaling 1.38 million pounds (692 tons) shipped off for disposal at US Ecology in Idaho.
  • Received Agency comments on 11 JUN for the initial Air Monitoring Report.
  • Continued heat-stress monitoring efforts to protect workers due to increasing ambient temperatures.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including solidification of vacuum bags and remaining low-activity wastes; completed additional lab-pack of remaining chemicals; completed cleaning and preparing the 1400 ton press pit to be filled and capped.
  • Continued work pursuant to the Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan, including mobilizing a crane to remove large HVAC and exhaust units from the buildings and the Building B South courtyard; cleaning and resizing of rooftop systems after removal (Building D interior is complete); completed removal of remaining vacuum lines from the roof and Building B South courtyard.

May 2015

  • Held a site tour for the agencies on 1 MAY 2015.
  • Commenced the Spring 2015 shipping campaign on 11 May 2015 and continued container loading activities. Through the end of May, 56 intermodal containers totaling 1.2 million pounds (609 tons) were shipped off site for disposal at US Ecology, Idaho.
  • Continued rooftop systems removal including mobilizing a crane on site to remove larger rooftop ventilation units, initiating preparation of systems associated with the High-Hazard work areas. Units were inspected for corrosive contamination and neutralized where necessary.
  • Continued building stabilization activities: removed the oven unit from Butler B3; completed removing ancillary equipment and debris from the 1400 ton press pit; removed the remaining heating propane from the 1,000 gallon tanks and removed the 500 gallon propane tank.
  • As ambient temperatures increased, began heat-stress monitoring for worker protection.
  • Continued preparation of Phase 3 Construction Submittal.

April 2015

  • Completed all of the work scoped in the Interior Asbestos Abatement Work Plan. Completed demolition of the non-structural concrete walls throughout Buildings A and B.
  • Continued building stabilization activities: Continued removal of Butler B3 utilities and insulation; completed removal of the office mezzanine, CRZ, and remaining spray on insulation from Building E; completed cleanup and equipment removal from the Building B penthouse and Electrical Room; Completed pumping out of the water from the 1400 ton press pit and began removing the ancillary equipment at the base of the pit.
  • Completed clean-out of the man hole and the 300 ton press pit in Building E; 34 pieces of depleted uranium (DU) were found at the base of the press. The DU was added to the existing inventory for off-site disposal. 
  • Commenced work in accordance with the Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan. As of 30 APR, all of the vacuum lines and 27 units have been removed from the roof.

March 2015

  • Buildings A, B, and C were closed during beginning of month due to the snow loads on the roof and health and safety concerns. These buildings reopened for regular work activity on 9 MAR.
  • Due to possible electrical problems, the parking lot lights have been shut off until repairs are made or alternative lighting is installed.
  • Building Stabilization activities continued, including completing removal of asbestos piping, tiles, and insulation in Buildings A, B, D, and E; began removing asbestos-containing door caulking from Building D and transite panels/insulation from Building C; completed removal of all interior crane units and utilities from Building E and Butler Buildings B1 and B2; completed cleaning and size reducing the sonodyne unit leaving the bulk portion in place to be removed during the next work phase; completed removal of non-asbestos spray-foam insulation from beneath the Building E mezzanine; commenced non-structural wall demolition in Buildings A and B, completing removal of the second floor walls; completed removal of seven rooftop units from above the Building E Mezzanine (unit E-77 had been dislodged by strong winds prompting early removal).
  • Completed review of Phase 3 Demolition Proposals and selected the demolition contractor.
  • Continued preparation of Phase 3 Construction Submittal.

February 2015

  • Buildings A, B and C were closed to site operations beginning 17 FEB due to the snow loads on the roof. These buildings remained unoccupied throughout the remainder of the month.
  • Shut down the sprinkler system in the Butler B1 and B2 Buildings after meeting with the Concord Fire Department and receiving their permission.
  • Snow removal and site maintenance activities were performed throughout the month.
  • Building Stabilization activities continued, including relocation of the main CRZ and equipment from Building C to Building E to allow access to work areas; completed removal and resizing of two remaining oven units in Building E (originally identified as oversized items to be removed during Phase 3 activities); completed asbestos abatement in Buildings A and B and began constructing containments in Building C; continued solidification of low-level active wastes and remaining inert metal powders and shavings.
  • Continued review of Phase 3 Demolition proposals and provided on site tours to prospective bidders.
  • Continued preparation of Phase 3 Construction Submittal.
  • Submitted revised Phase 2 Construction Submittal, Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan, and additional Response to Comments on 5 FEB.

January 2015

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including completion of removal of utilities in Building D and beginning removal of remaining utilities in Building C, completion of demolition of non-structural concrete walls beneath the C-mezzanine and tool room areas, completion of vacuum cyclone systems removal from Building E Mechanical mezzanine.
  • Completed asbestos abatement from Building A and commenced asbestos abatement in Building B.
  • Completed all work under the High Hazard Work Plan.
  • Began solidifcation of low-level vacuum bags and sonodyne waste.
  • Began identification and characterization of building materials in Buildings C and D.
  • Continued review of Phase 3 demolition proposals and preparation of Phase 3 construction submittal.

December 2014

  • Received Agency comments on Phase 2 Construction Submittal, Appendix F, Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan on 10 DEC.
  • Received additional Agency comments on the Phase 2 Construction Submittal on 15DEC.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including utility, crane and HVAC removal in Buildings C and D, completed demolition of non-structural concrete walls in the north end of Building C-Mezzanine and the former machine shop, completed demolition of Building D and E mezzanine office partitions and installed necessary guardrails for fall protection, and removal of the floor from the Building B elevator and conduction of a radiological survey at the base of the elevator shaft.
  • Installed an additional sound barrier adjacent to the northern air monitoring station in response to a follow-up noise complaint from a neighboring resident.
  • Continued High Hazard Work Plan activities, including neutralization of impacted materials generated from HF Area work and completed removal of all tanks, ductwork, pumps, and piping associated with the HF processing equipment.
  • Conducted onsite tours of the buildings for prospective demolition contractors responding to the Phase 3 Request for Proposal.
  • Coordinated with the Concord Fire Department as to the cause of the alarms due to a fault in the Building C sprinkler system flow sensor switch, unrelated to NTCRA activities. The switch may be reinstalled once a replacement is located.

November 2014

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including utility removal in Buildings C and D, commenced removal of interior corrugated steel walls in the north end of Building D, completed removal of plaster walls and ceilings in Buildings A and B to provide easier access for asbestos abatement, completed removal of acid-tray brackets and the remaining utilities in the vicinity of the acid tray brackets, completed demolition of non-structural concrete walls in the southern portion of Building D near the former pickling and foundry areas, completed demolition of Building D mezzanine office partitions and began demolition of Building E office partitions, installed a sound barrier adjacent to the east air monitoring station in response to a noise complaint from a neighboring resident.
  • Continued High Hazard Work including neutralization of waste generated from Acid Recycling Area and Acid feed lines, began removal and neutralization of equipment from the HF area. Also began removal and neutralization of equipment from the HF area and removed the calciner equipment tanks V-002, V-606, V-608, and V-609.
  • Continued preparation of Phase 3 Construction Submittal.
  • Submitted Response to Comments and Revised Interior Asbestos Abatement Work Plan on 24 NOV and received EPA’s conditional approval on 26NOV.
  • Shipped 32 intermodal containers to US Ecology, Idaho, for land disposal, which included one shipment of lead containing debris. Also loaded and shipped approximately 9,000 gallons of non-hazardous aqueous fluids to US Ecology Idaho.

October 2014

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including ductwork and utility removal in Buildings C and D, removed overhead gantry crane throughout Buildings C and D, drained oil from overhead gantry cranes and AC units, demolished non-structural walls in D-116 and Electrical Room, and removed fiberglass walls around Pickling Area.
  • Continued work in accordance with the High Hazard Work Plan including: equipment removal of the acid recycling area, continued neutralization of waste generated from acid recycling area and acid feed lines, and completed removal of the acid feed lines. Acid lines in the HF area were left to be addressed in the next phase of work.
  • Completed solidification of low activity Sonodyne waste.
  • Completed contamination reduction efforts in D-103.
  • Completed exterior survey to identify property boundaries on the southern portion of the site.
  • Continued preparation of Phase 3 Construction Submittal.

September 2014

  • A CREW/2229 Main Street Committee meeting was held on September 17th, 2014.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including ductwork, crane and utility removal in Buildings C and D. Completed ventilation and utility removal around the locker rooms in Building E. Completed demolition work in Building D, Room D-118, including the removal of offices, walkways, and the rotating electrode plasma work area. Completed demolition in Building D, Room D-116. Completed Freon recovery from air conditioning and refrigeration units on rooftops.
  • Completed the preliminary air sampling to establish baseline activity in accordance with the Air Monitoring Plan.
  • Continued work in accordance with the High Hazard Work Plan. The work in the Acid Pickling Area is completed and work commenced this period in the Acid Recycling Area.
  • Continued preparation of the Phase 3 Construction Submittal.
  • Completed the fence installation in the southeast portion of the property to isolate areas where discrete pieces of depleted uranium metal were located during the Depleted Uranium Metal Exterior Site Characterization Survey.
  • Began investigating potential temporary cap materials and vendors for use during building demolition.
  • Submitted the Phase 2 Construction Submittal, Interior Asbestos Abatement Work Plan on 3 SEP 14. Received Agency comments on 22SEP 14.
  • Submitted the Revised Phase 2 Construction Submittal, Rooftop Systems Removal Work and response to Agency comments on 3 SEP 14.
  • Received EPA comments on Perimeter Air Monitoring System on 11 SEP 14 and responded to those comments on 15 SEP 14. Received EPA approval on 17 SEP 14.
  • Received EPA comments on Asbestos Abatement Plan on 22 SEP 14.

August 2014

  • Continued heat stress monitoring to ensure workers are maintaining safe practices, particularly the High-Hazard work crews.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including rooftop system investigations to gather information on equipment dimensions, contamination, and accessibility; continued removal of ductwork and utilities in Buildings D and E; completed clearing and demolition of room E-131 in Building E; and organized and relocated DU materials to former electrical room in Building E for storage.
  • Completed scan of southeast fence line in order to identify areas to be fenced in support of the Exterior Depleted Uranium Exterior Survey Work Plan.
  • Commenced work within the Pickling Area in accordance with the High Hazard Work Plan. Pickling tanks, air scrubber, and most of the associated duct work have been removed and neutralized.
  • Completed installation of the air monitoring stations and equipment. The meteorological station has been calibrated. Installed mufflers on air monitoring stations to reduce exhaust noise. Commenced 30-day background sampling to establish baseline activity in accordance with the Air Monitoring Plan.
  • Completed the latest shipping campaign on 6 AUG 14 of 32 intermodal containers of off-site disposal at US Ecology in Grand View, Idaho.

July 2014

  • Implemented heat stress monitoring to protect workers due to high ambient temperatures in the buildings.
  • Building Stabilization activities continued, including solidification of DU vacuum bag contents and neodymium powders, investigations of rooftop systems, removal of duct work and utilities in Building E, completion of clearing electrical room in Building E, installation of fences around perimeters of air samplers and meteorological tower, and construction of access road to the back side of the boiler room for future asbestos removal operations.
  • Loaded and shipped 20 thirty-two cubic yard intermodal containers off-site for disposal at U.S. Ecology in Idaho.
  • Completed work plans and necessary preparations associated with the High Hazard Work Plan and began work on 28 JUL 2014.
  • Submitted Phase 2 Construction submittal Air Monitoring Plan, revised plan and responses to comments on 23 JUL 14.
  • Submitted the responses to Agency comments and revised Phase 2 Construction Submittal on 31 JUL 14.

June 2014

  • Conducted site tour for Agencies and Concord Fire Department on 2 JUN 2014.
  • Met with Concord Fire Department to discuss High Hazard Work Plan and techniques and safety precautions necessary for first responders in the event of an incident involving hydrofluoric acid.
  • Concord Light investigated a report of downed power line during the installation of the air samplers on 23 JUN 2014. All electrical lines were restored following installation of samplers.
  • Building Stabilization activities continued, including solidification of DU vacuum bag contents and neodymium powders, rooftop systems investigation, vacuuming of underground diesel storage tanks, dismantling and removal of waster water tanks in Building E waste process area, removal of clean-air handling units in Building E Mechanical Room, filtering of waste oils to remove sludge and tranfer into clean drums in a free-release portion of building preparation for disposal and dismantling and removal of pressure washing equipment from Building E.
  • Submitted response to comments on the Notification of High Hazard Materials Removal and Demolition Contractor on 9 JUN 2014 and received verbal approval on 16 JUN 2014.
  • Revised letter request for Fire Alarm System Modifications submitted to Concord Fire Department on 3 JUN 2014. Verbal approval received on 16 JUN 2014.
  • Removed remaining gas cylinders from site on 10 JUN 2014 for off-site disposal at US Ecology.

May 2014

  • Performed necessary community coordination for upcoming High Hazard work: Met with Concord Fire Department to discuss the High Hazard Work Plan and the potential for a hydrofluoric (HF) acid accident; Contacted the Department of Emergency Medicine and Emerson Hospital to evaluate what type of HF acid medical supplies would need to be purchased for the Emergency Room. Also began preparation of contamination reduction zones and equipment for High Hazard work.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including removal of utilities throughout Buildings A and B, completed capping of pits and trenches in Buildings C and D with the exception of the pit containing the 1,400 Ton Press, solidification of DU vacuum bag contents, commenced rooftop system investigation to gather information on equipment dimensions and accessibility, completed sorting and packaging of PCB and non-PCB light ballasts (all contained in vermiculite lined drums now), and completed DU exterior survey for areas not plotted properly in original survey.
  • Poured concrete foundations for placement of air sampling units and meteorological tower. Erected the met tower.
  • Completed packaging and shipment of lab-pack chemicals. Emptied underground storage tanks of all remaining fuel oil and vacuumed out the associated feed lines of residual fuel. Waste oil was disposed off-site by incineration.

April 2014

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including removal of utilities throughout Buildings A and B, completed removal of light fixtures and ballasts in Building D, preformed a building-wide cleanup campaign to remove dust and debris generated during previous loading activities, Completed survey of interior pits and trenches prior to starting filling operations, completed filling of pits in Building D, former foundry, and lateral trenches in Building C with gravel and began capping pits and trenches with concrete, inspected the well in Building D and determined depth of about 30 feet and radiological activity between 400k-500k cpm. In addition, completed onsite inspection and identification of non-structural masonry walls throughout Buildings A and B, continued solidification of materials from vacuum bags, completed separation and packaging of lab-pack chemicals, completed depleted uranium exterior survey of catch basins and drains and installed rooftop walkways across Buildings A, B and C for safe access for building maintenance and rooftop system investigations.
  • Submitted a notification of High Hazard Materials Removal and Demolition letter to EPA on 8 Apr 2014.
  • Shipped 8 intermodal containters off-site on 15-16 Apr 2014.

March 2014

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including completing removal of remaining combustible walls in Buildings A and B laboratories, continued removal of utilities throughout Building B and lab areas of Building A, dismantled and resized Starmet equipment for disposal (scissor lifts, aerial boom lift and fork lift). Commenced surveying the pits, cracks and penetrations of foundation slabs throughout the buildings. Transferred and containerized acids from the HF area day tanks. Completed draining of lead acid batteries to segregate electrolytes from universal waste.
  • Submitted the Buildings A & B Interior Non-Structural Wall Demolition Letter on 18 MAR 2014 for Agency review.
  • Submitted response to comments and the revised Air Monitoring Plan for Agency review on 27 MAR 2014.
  • Submitted the Rooftop Systems Removal Work Plan on 27 MAR 2014 for Agency review.
  • Shipped 32 intermodal containers off site for disposal during the weeks of 10 MAR and 17 MAR 2014.

February 2014

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including snow removal in response to numerous winter weather storms, completion of combustible wall removal in Buildings A except for laboratories, initiated removal of remaining combustible walls in labs, completed removal of piping/conduit from Building C and began removal in Building B, completed removal of vacuum lines in Buildings B and most of E, completed cleaning and removal of lab benches and fume hoods from Building A labs.
  • Completed response to DU fire incident: filled in pits in HF area, segregated and neutralized co-mingled waste piles and supersacks, transferred acids from day tanks to portable poly containers, and neutralized HF area and equipment.
  • Concord Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on 1 Feb 14. Alarm was associated with a sensitive low-flow sensor in Building C, which was corrected by resetting the system. It was determined that the sensor trips with water supply pressure variations in the Concord system and the alarm may continue to be triggered.

January 2014

  • Concord Public Works responded and repaired a water leak within Pump House #1 that caused potable water to migrate to Route 62 (North Main Street) on November 25, 2013.

  • Removed approximately 450 gallons of sludge from the North and South tanks in the Tank House and transferred the sludge to drums in preparation for encapsulation. Commenced encapsulation of sludge but halted activities on November 12, 2013 due to freezing conditions with the Tank House. Activities will resume upon installation of a temporary heater.

  • Disassembled four oversized Okuma units in Building D. Disassembled and removed sludges/yellow cake from furnaces, ovens, Building B Band Saw and oven base found in Butler B-3. Processed and sized for disposal the bar straightener in Building D.

October 2013

  • Received Agency approval on the Tank House Work Plan on October 1, 2013. Work commenced under the plan, including draining of the Building E waste water tanks and Tank House Tanks. Approximately 5,650 gallons were transferred to the frac-tank.
  • Continued Transportation and Disposal off site through October 4, 2013. Total shipped through October was 136 containers with 2,483,460 pounds (1,241 tons). Off-site shipment and disposal will resume in December 2013.

August 2013

  • Continued transportation and disposal of intermodal containers from 6 AUG 13 through 15 AUG 13 with a total amount of waste shipped off-site of 2, 210, 560 pounds (1,105.28 tons) to date.
  • Identified discrete pieces of depleted uranium (DU) metal in the upper two inches of soil covered by vegetation outside the buildings near the former employee entrance during routine radiological monitoring on 3AUG13. Submitted a plan for a DU metal site characterization survey on 27AUG13 to evaluate the soil, asphalt and concrete paved areas around the site not identified for remediation in the Feasibility Study.
  • Continued Building Stabilization activities including disassembling and demolishing equipment in Building C and D foundry areas and partial wall demotion of non-structural combustible walls in Building C. Also moved and staged all debris and materials in Butler Building B-3 into Building D for processing prior to transportation and disposal.

July 2013

  • Continued Building Stabilization activities, including packaging and loading of intermodal containers, removal of oils and fluids from machinery, demolition of debris and equipment in Buildings C, D, and E to assemble higher activity packages to screen with the Radionuclide Detector (RID) unit.
  • Received Agency comments on 17 JUL 13 on the Tank House Plan and Standard Operating Procedure for Stabilization of Metal Powders and Turnings identified in the Phase 1 Construction Submittal.
  • Paused transportation and disposal of intermodal containers from 12 JUL 13 until 5 AUG 13 to allow work crews to stockpile additional waste streams for shipment.
  • Through 31 JUL 13, one hundred and four 32-yard intermodal containers were shipped from the Site with a total weight of 1,797,680 pounds (898.84 tons).

In addition, relocated the fire alarm conduit and re-energized the garage door motor. Constructed a temporary wall for a contamination reduction zone (CRZ).
  • Completed grading around southern portion of buildings. Placed top soil stockpile immediately south of Butler Building B-2.
  • Packaged loose debris in Building E. Also disassembled equipment in Building E to assemble higher activity packages to screen with the Radionuclide Detector unit.

February 2013
